Hon Judi Moylan MP has urged Pearce residents to take personal action to reduce the devastating impact of stroke – Australia’s second biggest killer and a leading cause of disability.

“With some 60,000 strokes expected to occur in Australia in 2009 this is an important question for all of us,” Mrs Moylan said.
She said lives can be saved by learning the signs of stroke, knowing what can cause a stroke and what can be done to reduce the possibility of stroke.
The National Stroke Foundation has developed the FAST test as a simple way of recognising and remembering the signs of stroke:
• Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
• Arms – Can they lift both arms?
• Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
• Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away
World-renowned artist and Pearce resident Robert Juniper, himself a victim of stroke, believes recognising the signs of stroke is vital. The way one responds to stroke is also crucial.
“If you have a stroke, don’t feel sorry for yourself,” Mr Juniper said. “You have to work at completing your therapy and don’t give up on life because you can achieve a quality of life after a stroke.”
