Moylan announces $1.35 million for Narrogin local government services

The Narrogin Shire will receive $613,986 and the Town of Narrogin will receive $736,982 of Australian Government assistance in 2004–05 for local roads and the provision of other local government services through grants announced today by Member for Pearce Judi Moylan.
“These Local Government Financial Assistance Grants help councils to provide the high quality services that local communities need and expect of their local council,” Ms Moylan said.
“The grants are untied. This means that the Town of Narrogin and the Narrogin Shire can allocate the funds according to local priorities. Funds are used by councils to provide a range of health, community, recreational, cultural, and environmental services and to provide and maintain vital infrastructure such as roads.
“They are part of the ongoing assistance the Australian Government has provided to local communities for the past 30 years”.
Minister for Local Government, Territories and Roads, Jim Lloyd, said the Australian Government was aware of the importance of the grants he had approved to councils in Western Australia.
“Nationally, the Australian Government will provide $1.548 billion in financial assistance grants to local government for 2004–05, with Western Australian councils receiving $178.2 million or 11.52 per cent of the national total,” he said.
The Australian Government has increased total financial assistance grants funding to councils by $46.5 million for 2004–05 and has increased funding to councils by around $380 million since the Coalition came to office in 1996.
The grants are paid under the Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995, with the first quarterly payment expected on 16 August 2004.
In addition to these grants, councils in Western Australia will receive an additional $42.5 million this year for local roads under the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Programme.
