Pearce community leaders to meet with Shadow Communications and Broadband Minister

Federal Member for Pearce, the Hon Judi Moylan MP, will host the Shadow Minister for Communications and Broadband, Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, and 15 community leaders in a roundtable discussion on the most important communications issues facing Pearce on Thursday 9 June 2011.

The Gillard Government has stated the National Broadband Network will revolutionise how Australians interact with each other and the world. But with a growing price tag and an ever expanding list of questions, from it viability to its timeframe for construction, people are unsure what the NBN will mean for them.

With what could only be described as below par communications services already impacting on the daily lives of some in the electorate, Mrs Moylan said Mr Turnbull’s visit is timely.

"A number of towns in Pearce are only an hour from the Perth CBD yet their access to high speed broadband is woeful," Mrs Moylan said. "Although Broadband services have been extended to cover larger areas of the Wheatbelt, as well as areas to the East and North of the Perth Metropolitan area, the quality of service is poor.

"Phone coverage, both landline and mobile, is also an issue of great concern, particularly for those living in areas with a high risk of bushfire. We are very fortunate to have the Member for Wentworth in Pearce to discuss these important matters."

Mr Turnbull left law for business in 1987 where he has since been responsible for the establishment and success of many Australian businesses. In particular he has been a determined supporter of Australian technology. He co-founded OzEmail in 1994 and his software companies have won many awards for exporting Australian technology.

On 6 December 2007, he was appointed as Shadow Treasurer and following a leadership ballot in September 2008, he was elected by his colleagues to lead the Liberal Party as Leader of the Opposition, a position held until 1 December 2009.
