Community Heritage Grants open for application

Federal Member for Pearce, the Hon Judi Moylan MP has encouraged local community groups to apply for the Australian Government’s Community Heritage Grants before they close on June 30 2008. Mrs Moylan said that the Community Heritage Grants were established to enable communities to preserve their local heritage and that since 1994 over $2.5 million has been made available for projects right across Australia. “Community organisations such as historical societies, museums, public libraries, archives, Indigenous and migrant community groups which have public collections are eligible to apply,” Mrs Moylan explained. “$15,000 grants are available for projects which help preserve nationally significant collections and to provide collection management training that will improve the skills of staff and volunteers working with materials. Any Australian, not for profit, incorporated community organisation is eligible to apply.” “The Community Heritage Grants are a great way for a local community group to improve the local knowledge about the heritage of their area, collect information on a local organisation, or preserve the works of earlier generations.” According to Mrs Moylan our Australian heritage is a great national asset. “However much is located in small communities. These grants could help to preserve that heritage future generations,” Mrs Moylan said. “The Howard Government invested in the digitisation of the National Collection, making access to important parts of Australia’s past more widely available on the web. This work included the digitisation of World War 1 service records, and work is currently underway on World War 2 records.” “Whilst the Rudd Labor Government has cut the budget to the National Library, hindering regional touring of the national collection, access to digital records is still available on the internet at www.nla.gov.au.” More information can be found at www.nla.gov.au/chg. Applications for funding close on June 30 2008. “I encourage our local community groups and individuals to apply for these grants, to further enhance our knowledge of the past and preserve that knowledge for the future,” Mrs Moylan said.
