The Minister for Local Government, Territories and Roads, The Hon Jim Lloyd MP, and Member for Pearce, The Hon Judi Moylan MP, today announced AusLink Strategic Regional Program funding of $2.08 million for the Shire of Toodyay to upgrade Stirling Terrace.
Ms Moylan said: “This project involves the upgrading of a section of Stirling Terrace between the Bolgart and Goomalling Bridges. The road is currently in extremely poor condition and this upgrade will improve safety and transport connections for the community.”
She explained that Stirling Terrace in Toodyay was a regionally significant road that was vital to the region’s economy and the further development of Toodyay’s tourism industry.
“Stirling Terrace serves as the gateway to the north eastern section of the Wheatbelt, providing essential links for the region’s tourism, grain and livestock industries.
“The upgrade will improve the connection to the national and State road networks for heavy vehicles and improve access to grain centres and saleyards. It will also alleviate current safety concerns.”
The Toodyay Shire Council will contribute $895,000 in partnership with the Australian Government and the project is expected to be completed by early 2009.
Mr Lloyd said there has been a strong interest in the Program with 495 applications for funding being received across Australia seeking more than $1 billion in funding.
“AusLink’s Strategic Regional Program is designed to assist councils develop regional transport infrastructure to support industry, tourism and economic development,” Mr Lloyd said.
Ms Moylan congratulated the Shire of Toodyay for its successful application and thanked the Minister for making this funding available for such an important upgrading project.
The Australian Government’s commitment to local roads improvements under AusLink has reached $2 billion between the financial years of 2004-05 to 2008-09, enabling councils to accelerate works to maintain and improve the local road network.
