Upgrading of Great Northern Highway between Muchea and Wubin has begun, as part of a program which will see $358.8 million spent on the highway over the next five years.
A $1.9 million contract has been awarded by the Minister for Local Government, Territories and Roads Hon Jim Lloyd MP to CSR Emoleum to carry out part of the work, just south of Bindoon. The company will
re-construct 1.15 kilometres of highway, including major improvements to Tea Tree Road and Spice Road.
Member for Pearce Hon Judi Moylan MP says that this initial contract is an excellent start and should benefit all road users. She continued to add that the reconstruction should pick up as other tenders are approved.
“I understand that under the AusLink plan, a series of passing lanes will be built and widening and re-alignment of sections of highway which were urgently in need of upgrades will be undertaken,” Ms Moylan said.
Chittering Shire President Jan Stagbouer welcomed the announcement that this initial section of the project (near Bindoon) would be completed in early 2007.
"The Chittering Shire Council is delighted that work is underway to address the dangerous section of the Great Northern Highway south of the Bindoon townsite. This work is long overdue and we look forward to seeing its completion by January next year,” she said.
“We extend our thanks to Minister (Hon Jim) Lloyd and Minister (Hon Alannah) MacTiernan for recognising the urgency of the work, and our thanks especially go to Judi Moylan, Member for Pearce for the strenuous lobbying she has done on behalf of the Chittering community, to have this work funded and undertaken."
