Working towards safety on Great Northern Highway

At a positive meeting with Senator the Hon Ian Campbell, Minister for Local Government, Territories and Roads and representatives from the Shire of Chittering recently, Member for Pearce, Judi Moylan urged the Federal Government to give priority to $64 million funding for the remainder of work on The Great Northern Highway.
Late last year, Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, announced $14 million in Federal funding for the highway. This was as a direct result of Ms Moylan fighting for the safety of road users on Great Northern Highway for some time. She recently presented a petition signed by over 6000 people, organised by Helen Keillor of Muchea, to upgrade the Great Northern Highway from Middle Swan to Wubin.
With the total costing acknowledged at about $78 million, the Shire of Chittering is looking for $64 million to complete the work. The Minister agreed to consider this proposal.
At the meeting in Bindoon, the Minister committed to following up the possibility of safety audits for a stretch of road, from Muchea to Wubin, which Ms Moylan said was “in dire need of upgrading”.
Shire president Jan Stagbouer, Shire CEO Ray Hooper and Ian Watson, Bindoon Community Progress Association’s roads committee coordinator, told the Minister of their primary concerns.
These included the need for additional overtaking lanes, wider roads, better visibility, sealed shoulders, clearer and better marked overtaking lines and the need to eliminate obstructions. Increasing traffic volumes and the number of trucks which travel on this road were also important issues.
The Minister will consider a line markings review and removal of obstructions that may impede visibility.
“This is a very positive commitment,” Mrs Stagbouer said.
“The Minister said the road spoke for itself and was in need of urgent attention.”
Minister Campbell said this funding would be considered as part of the Federal budget in May.
“The first step would be a feasibility study to ascertain the problem areas and things which needed to be addressed,” Ms Moylan said.
“I will be working closely with Minister Campbell, the Shire of Chittering and the
Bindoon Community Progress Association to give Great Northern Highway a priority for funding.”
The Minister will also look into plans for the Perth-Darwin highway.
