$27 million in Australian Government funding for Pearce

Member for Pearce Hon Judi Moylan MP said today that the 19 Local Government Councils in Pearce would share in Australian Government funding of almost $27 million in 06–07 for local roads and the provision of other Local Government services - $22.1 million through the Financial Assistance Grants program and $4.89 million through Roads to Recovery. “The Local Government Financial Assistance Grants help councils to provide the high quality services that local communities need and expect of their local council,” Ms Moylan said. “These grants are untied so the Councils can allocate the funds according to local priorities. “Funds are used by councils to provide a range of health, community, recreational, cultural and environmental services and to provide and maintain infrastructure such as roads. “They are part of the ongoing assistance the Australian Government has provided to local communities for more than 30 years.” Nationally, the Australian Government has allocated $1.684 billion in Financial Assistance Grants to local government, with Western Australian councils receiving 11.6 per cent of the national total. “The Australian Government has increased Financial Assistance Grants funding to local government for 2006–07 by $67.4 million from 2005-06, bringing the total increase in funding to local government to around $520 million since the Coalition came to office 10 years ago. In addition to these grants, Western Australian councils are entitled to receive $45 million this year from the Australian Government for local roads under the AusLink Roads to Recovery Program. The Pearce Councils will share in $4.89 million of the $45 million WA total through Roads to Recovery.
