Volunteer recognised as a hero to Ellenbrook

During the past eight years Ellenbrook has benefited from the efforts of hardworking volunteer Margaret Collins. Late last month Ms Collins was recognised as the Metropolitan WA Local Hero. Ms Collins now resides in Yokine, although during her time at Ellenbrook she implemented several community initiatives and encouraged a caring and giving nature in her local neighbourhood. Member for Pearce Judi Moylan MP today announced the win, after Ms Collins was recognised for introducing a range of recreational activities, especially aimed at young people. “From her home, she established a craft group, recreational activities such as badminton and aerobics, and she was always there for people in need of advice,” Ms Moylan said. The Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Hon John Cobb MP, said: “The Local Hero award recognises ordinary citizens who do exceptional things, whose hard work and commitment make Australia the great place it is. They show us what being a good Australian citizen is all about.” Mr Cobb said the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs was proud to sponsor the Local Hero Award because it recognised the contributions made by so many Australians in their local communities every day of the year. All State and Territory Local Hero Award recipients will go through to the Australian of the Year Local Hero Award 2006, with the winner to be announced on Australia Day eve in Canberra.
