Moylan attends official Green Corps Graduation

Member for Pearce Judi Moylan today congratulated seven young people aged 17 to 20 who graduated from the Green Corps Bennett Brook Restoration and Trails Project.
Ms Moylan handed out certificates at the official graduation to the dedicated and inspired young people.
Green Corps - Young Australians for the Environment program is a youth initiative of the Coalition Federal Government.
“Green Corps fosters two of Australia’s most valuable resources - our environment and our young people,” Ms Moylan said.
“To date, over 11,700 young people have participated in more than 1100 Green Corps projects. “
The graduating team, which worked from January to July 2004, were required to adapt the project’s original plan. During July and December 2003 a previous Green Corps team collected information on walk trails in the Bennett Brook area and instead of being used to build a walk track the information was adapted by the new team for use by The Bennett Brook Environment Centre and Emergency Services for restoration, maintenance and fire control work.
The graduating team’s tasks included –
* reports on litter, graffiti, property damage and erosion sites
* a native vegetation survey
* a report on recommended location of boardwalks to cross wet areas or provide easier access to wheelchairs
* a map of a viable route through varying terrains, from sandy paths to densely vegetated swamps; and
* weeding and planting trees
A final report is being completed.
The environmental outputs achieved nation-wide from completed projects include propagation and planting of over 11 million trees, erection of more than 4700 kilometres of fencing, removal of over 36,000 hectares of weeds, collection of more than 7700 kilograms of seeds and construction or maintenance of more than 4000 kilometres of walking tracks.
“Participants not only achieve excellent environmental outcomes, they also complete accredited training courses,” she said.
